These are a few photo's from the island of Okinawa, and training there.
These are a few of my favorite photographs from my travels to Okinawa. This one is of "The Elephant", a natural hollowed out portion of rock, now quite famous with both tourists and locals.

Destination Okinawa

Okinawa and the surrounding islands in the Ryukyu chains are far more than just the birthplace of Karate. There are cave systems; sites of historical significance; excellent diving areas; foods and fruit found here and no where else; the largest aquarium in Asia, and an individual culture that should be experienced by everyone.

Instructors Gasshuku 2005

Of course, the primary reason for Karate Instructors to visit Okinawa is for the training, and where do we go? We go to the source of Okinawan Goju Ryu, Higaonna Morio Sensei, at the Hombu Dojo in Naha!

Family

Okinawan culture is big on family, and members of a Karate family can see the sights on Okinawa as well as experience a new perspective on the activity that they enjoy.

Summer Lunch

Cold Udon on a hot, humid summer's day! A refreshing, and especially welcome respite from the heat.

Winter Dinner

A steaming bowl of Soba is just what's required to take the edge off the chill during Winter on Okinawa. While the winters are often mild, a sudden change can spell rain and temperatures in the mid to low teens.

Senior Grading

Mal Sempai is one of those who have travelled to Okinawa for senior Dan grading. There is no better place to be tested than the birthplace of Karate. It is deeply satisfying!

Friendship

Chris and Mirko Senseis are old training partners, and even though they are living in different countries, they use the Gasshuku on Okinawa to renew old friendships, and to engage in some quality partner work.

Something Different

Many new experiences are yours for the having. Just be willing to spend some time exploring Okinawa. From the quiet side alleys with everything from knife and tatami makers, to the hustle of the fresh food markets in the early morning, Okinawa is bound to surprise you.

Common Purpose

Karateka from around the world visit this park,as it contains the memorial stone of the Founder of Goju Ryu, Miyagi Chojun Sensei. From left, Moorthy-Singapore, Mal-Australia, Chris-South Africa, Pete-USA and Kam-Hong Kong, are represented.

Skill

One of the most profound lessons of Karate is that our experience is either limited to, or propelled by our individual efforts. Men such as Bakkies Laubscher Sensei have come to have an exceptional grasp of Karate due not to the circumstances of their birth, but because of a desire for self-improvement.

Fun for Kids

Okinawa is very kid friendly, and there are parks and beaches for all to enjoy. Some areas are more developed, but every child I know loves to run, jump, swim and climb, and those opportunities are everywhere.

Cultural Heritage

Okinawan cultural heritage is very important to the people of Okinawa, and they have done a lot to preserve it. It is recommended that you visit Okinawa to gain a deeper understanding of the people who created Ti, Te, Tode and today Karate.

Shuri Castle

Shuri Castle is a fine example of Okinawan determination. The original castle was destroyed many years ago, and several replacement have been rebuilt, including this one, which replaced the castle destroyed during WWII. One visit is not enough.

Natural Okinawa

Okinawa is full of natural beauty, and some of the best hidden gems are only a turn off the highway away. Take some time to explore Okinawa, and return home with more than exceptional training, come back with a new sense of self.
