What is Karate?

Keeping the explanation of Karate as broad as possible, Karate is a Martial Art system originating from the country of Japan. The Karate taught at the Bujutsukan is Okinawan Goju Ryu, from Okinawa prefecture, the birthplace of Karate.

The five Major systems and their recognised offshoots are all easily defined as authentic Karate. We will be making a list of all the systems as time allows. For today, the five majors are a good start.

What Karate isn't...

Karate is not from China, Korea or any country other than Japan. There are many groups who claim to teach Karate, but are actually teaching something else entirely. There are also those who teach an amalgam of systems, often based on traditional Karate, and refer to them as Karate. I find the former disingenuous, while the latter is a respectful nod to their origins.

Karate is not a game. There is a serious sporting element, but Karate cannot be played at.
